Knights

Please read the following information about KNIGHTS and complete the exercises...

Knights were important soldiers, in the Middle Ages. They were usually the sons of rich and noble families and they went to battle to fight for their king. It was difficult to became a knight, because metal armour horses and shields were very expensive. Only rich families could spend so much money. Knights wore heavy metal armour and carried large shields. On this shield was a special picture, called a coat of arms. Each family had their own individual picture. This helped other soldiers recognise each knight.

Tournaments

Tournaments were sporting events of the Middle Ages. People liked going to see their favourite knights fight. These tournament started in the 11th century. The most popular sport was called jousting. In this sport two knights carried long, heavy poles, called lances. They rode quickly in a straight line towards each other. They then tried to knock the other off his horse with the lance, jousting was very popular because it was like a battle.
